vespa frame jig details
Back To Home Page
This is the ORIGINAL vespa frame jig, originally used by Mike Clark, and latterly used by Revival scooters, down in Melksham.
It has now moved to my premises,in the North of England, near to Carlisle.
As far as i am aware, this is the only original frame jig in the country.
It is capable of jigging most Vespa models,from 42L2's,to GS's,small frames,SS90's,PX's,plus rally,sprint,super etc,etc.

The frame is   bolted to the jig via the engine mounting point and once the upper and lower bearing races have been removed,a steel bar and locating bushes are inserted into the fork stem.

It works using different mounting plates for the different models.

The bar is used to check if the frame is true or out of alignment. The steel bar has a point on the lower end which lines up with a dot on the base of the jig and a locating pin is used at the top to make sure everthing is in line.

If adjustment is required, this can be done using a porta power.
Before any work can be carried out on the frame, the engine and front forks need to be removed.

IDEAL WAY OF MAKING SURE YOUR FRAME IS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU SPEND MONEY GETTING IT PAINTED
THE FOLLOWING PICTURES ARE OF A SMALL FRAME WE RECENTLY STRAIGHTENED.
AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PICTURES,THIS SCOOTER HAD TAKEN QUITE A HIT ON THE FRONT END.
AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE NEXT TWO PICTURES,THE FRAME WAS WELL OUT OF ALIGNMENT WHEN WE PUT IT ON THE JIG.
IT WAS ABOUT 24mmOVER TO THE RIGHT AT THE BOTTOM AND ABOUT 20mm OVER TO THE LEFT AND 10mm BACK AT THE TOP
WE THEN PORTA POWERED THE FRAME BACK IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION PAST IT'S NORMAL LINE AND THEN LET THE WEIGHT OFF TO LET THE FRAME COME BACK TO ITS NORMAL POSITION
THE LAST 2 PICTURES SHOW THE FINAL POSITIONS OF THE TOP AND BOTTOM PINS LOCATED CORRECTLY,SHOWING THAT THE FRAME IS STRAIGHT.
THE FRAME CAN NOW BE PREPPED FOR PAINT
because of the damage to the frame behind where the forks sit,we decided to cut out the twisted metal and seam weld in a new section.
This is the same frame ready for paint.Another one saved from the scrap heap!
